Do you want to become a lawyer ?

The auntie helping with the chicken rice stall at the hawker center near my place somehow know that I worked in the lawyer's office. Initially she like almost everyone else thought I'm a lawyer. I've to explain clearly to her I'm not. Anyway she always talk to me & give me more chilli which is sweet. The other day I bump into her during her break & she told me, her son is thinking of getting into law. He has got good grades & what do I think? Do Lawyers make alot of money, yes , no?

Wow... that's a tough one. Told her it's hard work initially. Also it's hard to get into the big firms. It's nothing like what we watch on the TV, not so glamorous. The popular saying " Make crime pay. Become a Lawyer" couldn't be more wrong. From what I see this don't really apply to Singapore. Our lawyers don't make much  thru' defending people, Spore is just not that kind of society- thank goodness. But I could be wrong though, things are changing.  Anyway I'm just working in one firm, I don't have all the information.

However when the property market is vibrant, yes lawyers do make more. At least my boss does.

Does a shabby office = bad lawyers?

A friend bought a condo  with her boy friend. They engaged a lawyer, someone recommended. After awhile, she's beginning to doubt if they had made the right choice, as something is just not right. Now she's afraid if he's trustworthy etc...  She called me & ask me. So what do I do? I took a long time to outlined to her what to expect , the steps her lawyer would be going through etc etc . She's afraid her lawyer would run away with her money as his office looks quite shabby.

Well nobody has a more sacred obligation to obey the law than those who make the law! And it's sad to see lawyers running away with clients deposit. But that rarely happens. Besides a shabby office hardly reflects the integrity of the lawyer right? Maybe he's just not into deco or do not have an eye for aesthetic renovation. I took a picture of my office & sent to her. She feels better now ...LOL....

The "cheapo make-shift know-it- all law employee but not a lawyer, person!"

A friend was so pissed with someone , she wanted to sue him. Guess what she did? She called me of course- the "cheapo make-shift know-it- all law employee but not a lawyer, person!" 

She wants my opinion! Wow... everyone wants my "free opinion". My Boss the Big-Time-Lawyer, said : In law, nothing is certain but the expense. That's what I told her & now she's angry with me as well.

"How to Win Friends and Influence People ??????"

I've recently discovered a personal challenge I guess I always knew was there but recently became glaringly obvious.  I want people to like me, so I sometimes try too hard to achieve this. I guess somewhere way back (or maybe over a series of times), I felt unliked, unloved and unwelcomed enough to think I had to find external validation to my existence.

So, it seems I'm on a regular search for this elusive emotional stamp, usually from people I wouldn't ordinarily think would like me. It's like a twisted relationship treasure hunt or geocaching game. I'm not sure what “winning” this game will look like but I'll know it when I see it and I haven't arrived.

This is complicated by the sense I'm already at a likeability deficit before someone gets to know me.
Yes, I know how messed up this sounds, and it won't likely earn me a spot as add-on chapter to "How to Win Friends and Influence People." Sigh..... sad....

I'm very happy working in the law firm as a nobody.

You know when you work in a law firm, your friends & relatives would often ask you for advice- often forgetting you are NOT A LAWYER !!!! When I reminded them, some would look a little embarrassed, others would go further & ask why cant I just take up a law course somewhere, then I can become a BIG time lawyer later.

TV lawyers are so fun :))

I ask my friends why are they so cheapo? And one of them said ,she always provide me with all kinds
of "important" information too. Like where to buy the cheapest toothpaste, toilet paper & other toiletries. Where's the best laska & so on .... I reminded her that's not quite the same ....lol.... Anyway I'm done with studying. I'm very happy working in the law firm as a nobody.

Plus the exciting lives of lawyers we so often saw on TV is glamorized & fictional. We don't have big law suits here. My Boss often say  "Compromise is the best and cheapest lawyer." ..LOL... so true.

The laws you choose to obey.

Many of life's circumstances are created by three basic choices:
the disciplines you choose to keep,
the people you choose to be with; and,
the laws you choose to obey.

Many people find that out the hard way! Lesson is, before you do anything, THINK hard. Don't regret later. If something don't hurt anyone, including yourself , fine go ahead. If it does, please quit before it's too late.

Office Politics??? Mind your own business !

Last Year, after I wrote "how useless law can be" in this blog, I got into a small fix ! Someone in my company told my boss about it, can you imagine how free some people can be?

Anyway my Boss commented on what I wrote in a joking manner. He's pretty cool guy. The thing is, it's only a comment on my own blog, I dont see what's the big deal. The strangest thing is, I'm surprise my colleagues actually do come to read my blog ! And afterwards even "talk" about it, got offended & report to my Boss! This is office politics 101 people!

Lucky my Boss (the lawyer) is not offended by it at all, just remind me there are like super nosy people around & warn me not to step on their toes. It took me a while to get over that (like months !!!!!), But I guess that's life right. A lesson from this: I reminded myself to mind my own business. That's my resolution for 2016.
